Are You Paying Attention to Your Toothbrush?

Affordable Dental Solutions Brenham

Your mouth is not the only area that contains millions of bacteria and germs, but your toothbrush is also contaminated with them.

Does that mean you should stop brushing your teeth?

Brushing your teeth is one routine habit that you have to keep up with for the rest of your life even if it contains loads of bacteria and germs. The bacteria on the toothbrush are not a threat to your health, as research tells us that they will not make you fall sick.

Wait, how is the possible, you wonder?

The toothpaste you spread on the toothbrush contains bacteria and germs killing properties, meaning that it will take care of all those nasty microorganisms on the toothbrush.

However, you should still get in the habit of changing your toothbrush, as it does have an expiry date. When the toothbrush exceeds its expiry date, it is no longer effective in cleaning your teeth. Get in the habit of paying attention to your toothbrush by doing the following things:

  1. Keep Your Toothbrush Dry

You need to rinse your toothbrush with water, and then allow it to dry. In order for germs to survive, they need moisture. Drying your toothbrush before using it marks the end of the germs life. Once you have brushed your teeth, rinse your toothbrush to make sure you do not leave any toothpaste on it.

  1. Store Your Toothbrush Upright

Place your toothbrush in a holder or a cup in an upright position. In doing so, the air will dry its bristles and kill germs. Purchase a travel holder to keep your toothbrush in if you are travelling by road. You can soak the toothbrush in mouthwash to kill any germs or put it in boiling water for five to ten seconds.

  1. Keep Your Toothbrush Away from the Toilet

You do not want to brush your teeth in the same bathroom you use the toilet. When you flush your toilet, it sends bacteria flying in the air. It can get on your toothbrush, which is disgusting. You need to keep your toothbrush three feet away from the toilet and make sure you have closed it with a cap.

  1. Never Share Your Toothbrush

One of the cardinal rules about toothbrushes is never to share them with your partner, children, or family member. Using another person’s toothbrush or sharing yours can lead to cavities or tooth decay.

  1. Remember to Change Your Toothbrush

You should change your toothbrush after every three months. If the bristles of the toothbrush wear out before the expiry date of three months, change it. The condition of your bristles is an indication that you need to replace your toothbrush with a new one.
